Hyderabad is often called Shamshabad because the international airport is here. These are two different places and are not the same. They are close by, and people tend to mix up their names. Shamshabad was originally known as Sedanti Village. It was then called Shamsabad in honour of Shams-ul-Umra. Over time, its name came to be known as it is today. The neighbourhood is where the new airport is. The primary airport was at Begumpet earlier. But a larger airport was needed as the city began to grow and get bigger. The area was picked because it is in a great spot close to Hyderabad. It also has excellent connectivity with wide roads.
On March 23, 2008, the Rajiv Gandhi International Airport was opened. Since it is in the area, it is the reason why Hyderabad is called Shamshabad. People of the area call it the Shamshabad Airport because it is built here.
The area is in the southern part of the city. Other places are easy to get to from the neighbourhood. Well-developed, wide roads, such as the PV Narasimha Rao Expressway and NH44, can reach the airport. The distance from Hyderabad to Shamshabad is about 24 kilometres, a drive of half an hour.
Though Hyderabad, being called Shamshabad, is not correct, the area has grown because of the airport. Many roads and services have come up here. There has been a huge movement of people into the area. A lot of grand projects for homes are coming up. One such project is the Nawaab-themed Godrej Regal Pavilion in Rajendra Nagar, which is nearby.
Even though the area is closely linked to the city, Hyderabad is still Hyderabad. People say they are going to Shamshabad when they go to the airport, the city’s gateway. The names are sometimes interchanged as the airport is a key landmark in the area.
